Several hundred yards west of here is Greyfriars Kirk, one of Aberdeen’s most historic churches dating back to the early 16th century. Originally part of a Franciscan friary, the building became a place of Reformed worship after the Scottish Reformation in 1560. In 2004 the congregation from Greyfriars church was absorbed into the North Church of St Andrew to form Queen Street Church. Several photographs and other pieces of art from Greyfriars hang in the Cruden Hall at Trinity Church. Today, the building stands as a witness to centuries of faith in the heart of the city. Greyfriars is noted for its simple yet beautiful architecture, reflecting the Presbyterian emphasis on the preaching of God’s Word and reminding us of the central place worship used to hold in the life of our city. It is a monument which leads us to cry out to God for the same to be true once again in our day and in the generations to come.
