George Wishart (c.1513–1546) was an early Reformation preacher whose bold stand for the gospel cost him his life. Educated at Aberdeen University and in Europe, Wishart returned to Scotland with a passion to proclaim the Bible’s truth in the language of the people. His sermons drew many to hear the message of salvation in Christ alone. Arrested for heresy, Wishart was executed by hanging and then burned at the stake in St Andrews, becoming one of Scotland’s first Protestant martyrs. His courage inspired others, including John Knox, and helped pave the way for the Scottish Reformation. At his trial he turned to the Scriptures and his final words were:

“I beseech you, Christian brethren and sisters, that ye be not offended at the Word of God, for the affliction and torments which you see already prepared for me. But I exhort you that you love the Word of God, your salvation, and suffer patiently, and with a comfortable heart, for the Word's sake, which is your undoubted salvation and everlasting comfort.”
