Hugh Martin (1822-1885)
Martin Room

Hugh Martin (1822–1885) was a Free Church minister and theologian known for his rich preaching and deep theological writings. Born in Aberdeen, he studied at Aberdeen Grammar and Marischal College, where he excelled at Mathematics before he took Divinity classes at King’s and Marischal and entered the ministry of the Church of Scotland. Martin served in several congregations but remained closely associated with the Free Church’s stronghold in the north-east (he was won over to Free Church principles by hearing a speech of William Cunningham at the General Assembly on 23rd May 1842). His books, including works on the atonement and Christ’s person and work, continue to be valued for their clarity and profound spiritual depth. Martin combined intellectual strength with pastoral warmth, showing how deep theology can fuel devotion and practical godliness. His life and work show us that Aberdeen has long been a place where thoughtful and faithful gospel ministry has flourished.
